The Writer

I enjoy sharing stories.

I’m a recent 2009 graduate of Eastern University.  Unlike others who graduated with an Elementary Education degree like me, I decided to explore overseas mission work instead of looking for a teaching job.  I have a passion for meeting new people and being with others.  I wanted to live and work and learn in a community different from my own.  So, discerning and applying and interviewing for a 3 year mission internship program, I was commissioned in October 2009 as a mission intern with the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM). The GBGM is the mission organization of The United Methodist Church.  I am currently serving in South Africa until February 2011.  Then, I will be placed in the United States for another 18 months to fulfill my three year commitment to the program.

Living overseas, in a country and culture completely different from my own has been very exciting and challenging.  Moments of excitement and challenge are all part of my story, forming and shaping who I am.  This is where I seek to share my story.  Thank you for reading and joining me on my journey. I invite you to share your story with me as we journey together.

Rachel, I haven’t looked all month at your blog – it’s been a crazy 3 weeks starting my new job. But, what a fabulous picture of you at the Atlantic Ocean. I don’t have a camera or know how to post pics, but I’m amazed as I walked around Cape May Friday night after visiting 6 families in one day – 5 new ones. Usually I see 3 or 4 at the most, so it was an exhausting day, but a good one. Cape May is decorated for Christmas – sooo pretty. And, a beautiful sunset.. God is good – I’ll be excited to hear about your experience in DRC – you know that’s where Tshishinen is from – her husband and boys are still there, trying to get a Visa to get here… Have you ever heard from Lorna?? or ask anyone if they know her. She’s pretty active in UM circles…
God bless you bunches!

Hello, Rachel
Your blog was cited in the “New Dimension”.

My wife and I are from Florida and are presently volunteering at the Seth Mokitimi Methodist Seminary in Pietermaritzburg. We’ve been here since late July.

You don’t a lot of time left in SA, but if you get a chance to visit the seminary, let me know and we’d be glad to show you around.

For more, see website above.
